Historic Preservation Impacts Our Economy

We’ve recently released the findings of a study on the economic impact of historic preservation in Columbia!  Read how historic preservation activities have created quantifiable positive economic impacts in Columbia.

Coalition of

Columbia’s Historic Districts

The coalition serves as an avenue for neighborhood associations, business districts, and individuals to collaborate on shared goals and initiatives. The coalition is independent from the City of Columbia, and works to support preservation efforts in the community at large.

CCHD Mission:

To promote the power of historic preservation in our community. Our mission will be accomplished by connecting advocates, neighborhoods, agencies, and business leaders in the discovery of creative and productive solutions to shared concerns across historic districts and in the stewardship of Columbia’s historic neighborhoods and resources.

COMMUNICATE + CONNECT

Make preservation information accessible to historic districts and the general public.

EDUCATE + ADVOCATE

Educate others about the positive impact preservation efforts + historic districts have in our city.

DISCOVER + PROBLEM SOLVE

Bring to light + address mutual concerns across historic districts and work together to identify resources to develop creative and productive solutions.

INFORM + ENGAGE

Share information and resources between historic districts and encourage participation in preservation activities.

Coalition Projects + Initiatives

The coalition is exploring a number of initiatives to increase community knowledge surrounding the architecture, design, and character found in Columbia’s historic districts. As these are rolled out, the City will help increase accessibility by providing updates on this page.

Paws for Preservation Calendar

The Coalition recently spearheaded a fundraising effort to support preservation workshops that will help owners of historic homes confidently take on projects like preserving historic windows, repairing plaster, and repointing bricks!  Funds were raised through the creation and sale of a 2024 Paws for Preservation calendar – bios of the 2024 calendar models appear below.

2024 Calendars are SOLD OUT!!  Stay tuned for opportunities to participate in future efforts!

Meet our models

The furry friends featured in the 2024 Paws for Preservation Calendar were selected by coalition members, and included neighborhood residents and visitors alike.  Would you like your pet to be featured in next year’s calendar? Stay tuned for the 2025 calendar photo contest!

Belle

Elegant Belle is a long time resident of the Landmark District where she enjoys taking walks and visiting with her best friend the mailman. Belle maintains a busy social calendar and regularly enjoys playtime with friends at NOMA Bark Park. She occasionally indulges with an ice cream treat but for dining out prefers Spotted Salamander, where her many fans give her lots of pats.

Billie

Beautiful Billie is thrilled to be representing her home neighborhood of Earlewood where she enjoys sitting on her large front porch for optimal people and squirrel watching. While snuggle time and yummy snacks are two of her favorite things, she manages to keep fit with long swims in the lake. Billie is currently considering a career in modeling, which truly seems like more of a calling.

Cloud

This free spirit kitty is a friend to all he meets. Cloud loves to keep an eye on the University Hill neighborhood, where he currently resides, and is excited to be included as his neighborhood representative as it may ultimately expand his fan base. Current applications to join his fan club are being accepted in the form of treats (or anything in food form, really).

Huey

Handsome Huey loves new adventures and meeting new people, especially if they bring treats. Although he is an energetic and spunky little dude, he prefers the company of calmer four legged friends and is currently searching for a forever walking buddy. This sweet boy is currently staying with Meowdog Animal Rescue and is excited for the future.

JellyBean

JellyBean is a Columbia native who loves to stay active around town. When she is not running, jumping, chasing balls, or playing tug-of-war, she is snuggled up on the couch with her favorite person - mom. As a curious pup, she enjoys exploring Columbia’s Landmarks and is grateful for the treats she receives as a reward for posing so well.

Kabuki

Regal Kabuki has decided that representing the Melrose neighborhood in this year’s calendar might be worth his time. When he is not surveying his kingdom from the top of the fridge he enjoys some much deserved downtime getting pampered and grants others the honor of combing out his long luxurious locks.

Little Ricky

Little Ricky is currently enjoying his retirement in the Granby neighborhood. At 14 years of age, Little Ricky says active by keeping an eye on all the youngins out and about, reporting any shenanigans immediately with an enthusiastic bark. Otherwise you will find him eating or thinking about eating in his charming saltbox mill house.

MarshMellow

This ball of floof is the mischievous MarshMellow. At only 1 year of age, Mellow’s extensive list of talents include laying down in precisely the wrong place and refusing to move, accessing all items at counter height, and chewing up anything that fits in her mouth. Although not excited by long walks, MarshMellow is happy to sit for photos in the shady spots of the Landmark District.

Neville + Kingsley

Goofy Neville is an active pup who loves to run at the dog park, play in patches of monkey grass, and visit the beach. His sweet brother Kingsley enjoys car rides, playing in the river, and bedtime. Both boys love to fit in a good cuddle with mom any chance they get.

Sally

Sweet Sally is a playful girl from Fairfield County. She chases squirrels and walks her tiny humans to school each morning. She also loves visiting Columbia’s historic public spaces like the Ensor-Keenan House and the Bull Street campus, and frequently attends Fireflies games. Her true passions are barking at all the dogs, cats, and joggers that go by her window and snuggling with her family.

Sampson

Sampson is a young pup from the woods of Lexington County. He enjoys playing with his sister Sally, going on walks, and chewing his humans’ shoes. He loves visiting the Vista and the array of smells, pets, and snacks that can be found all around. Wide sidewalks and former railroad lines make for great places to explore. He's also a big baby who loves to snuggle up with his dad.

Shelby

Shelby is a clever 2-year-old girl who is happy to show off her many tricks to any excited audience. As a spunky, youthful girl, Shelby enjoys playtime with her family (kids included) and taking long runs outside any chance she gets. As a current resident of Cottontown, she is honored to be included as her neighborhood representative.

Toby

Lovely Toby is enjoying simple pleasures in this phase of his life. When he isn’t taking a long nap in the sun, you’ll find him snacking on a bit of pizza crust or getting a good ear scratch from his humans.

Taras

Darling Taras came to Columbia from Deja Vu Briards in Cleveland, OH. He is still a playful pup and enjoys his squeaky toys, chew bones, and his flirt pole. Between belly rubs, you’ll find him chasing squirrels or having zoomies around his house.
